In the flat Karoo landscape of the Northern Cape there are many completely flat and dry lakes. These are known as 'Pans' in South Africa. Malcolm Campbell tried to break the world land-speed record on one of these 'Pans' in 1926. ( Verneuk Pan ). On the rare occasion when it does rain their surfaces fill up with water. This Pan lies between van Wyksvlei and Copperton Mine on the the gravel Road 357.
