Large and flat lake like 'pans' slowly gather water after some heavy rains. A very low annual rainfall and their salty surfaces prohibit growth during much of the year. These rain clouds pass over a large 'pan' between Van Wyksdorp and Prieska in the northern Cape Province of South Africa.
