Nearly 88 percent of the nation's farms—and 67 percent of farm and ranch land—are operated by individuals or families, according to the bureau. Most corporate tarm operators, almost 90 percent, are family corporations. Some other interesting Census Bureau facts: Farms average 415 acres in size. The number of small farms, those with 10 acres or less, increased by more than 20 percent since 1974. Most have low volume sales and are operated on a part time basis. Over 46 percent of the nation's farms are operated by people who do not consider farming their principal occupation.
