Phineas Taylor "P. T." Barnum (July 5, 1810 - April 7, 1891) was an American politician, showman, and businessman remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes and for founding the Barnum & Bailey Circus. He was also an author, publisher, and philanthropist. He purchased Scudder's American Museum, at Broadway and Ann Street, NYC, in 1841. Renamed "Barnum's American Museum," he upgraded the building, added exhibits, and it became a popular showplace.
