Fungus sprouting from caterpillar. Coloured 3D reconstructed computed tomography (CT) scan showing the fruiting body (thin, right) of a Cordyceps sinensis fungus sprouting from the head of a mummified ghost moth (Thitarodes sp.) caterpillar (fat, left). This fungus parasitises the caterpillars of ghost moths. It germinates inside the caterpillar then kills and mummifies it before the fruiting body sprouts from the corpse to spread its spores.
