Materials tolerance testing. Researcher using a creep test frame to carry out tests with a three-zone split furnace (opened at left) and an extensometer (centre). A creep test involves putting an object under strain and measuring the response, in this case with an extensometer. The furnace will be closed around the extensometer and sample, heating it during the test. An extensometer is used to measure tensile length changes during tests. Photographed at NASA's Glenn Research Center (GRC), Ohio, USA. This GRC image dates from 23 April 2002.
