United Kingdom/Central Africa: John Hanning Speke (4 May 1827 - 15 September 1864), English explorer. Stipple engraving by S. Hollyer (fl. 19th century), c. 1863. John Hanning Speke was an officer in the British Indian Army who made three exploratory expeditions to Africa and who is most associated with the search for the source of the Nile. The discovery of the Nile's sources is erroneously attributed to him, even though the first European to find them was the Spaniard missionary Pedro Paez in the 17th century.
