Valero Oil Refinery, Aruba, with unpolluted Caribbean Sea in the foreground.

Valero Oil Refinery is owned by the Coastal Oil Company of Houston, Texas, who bought the site from Exxon on 20th April 1991. Prior to this, Exxon operated the Lago Oil and Transport Company at the site from 1929 but closed the refinery in 1985 following a fall in the demand for oil. Historically, oil has been a key contributor to Aruba's economy.
