Abbeystrewry parish church in Skibbereen

Abbeystrewry- the Abbey of the Stream takes its name from the religious house that was situated about a mile to the west of Skibbereen on the bank of the Ilen River. There is no record of an earlier church building than that consecrated by Bishop Wetenhall about the year 1686. A church capable of holding 360 people was built in 1827 at a cost of £1,181. During the incumbency of Rev. Canon Goodman this building was taken down, with the exception of the tower and re-erected after plans by the cork architect Hill.
