The canons of the Grand River have not infrequently-been confounded with the Grand Canon of the Colo-rado River, by tourists who have not visited the latter,in consequence of an unfortunate coincidence ofnames, and further confusion has resulted from theuse of the title Grand Canon in connection withthe gorges of the Gunnison and the Arkansas. TheGrand Canon of the Colorado River is entitled bydivine right to a monopoly of the name. It is situatedin Arizona, and was described in its place. 147. This Alpine land of prodigious scenery andinspiriting air, and of phenomenal mineral andagricultural wealth, we now enter upon thewest. Every successive scene is an event,every turn of the way a revelation, advancingin ascending climaxes. From Grand Junction, at the confluence ofthe Grand and Gunnison rivers, to ColoradoSprings the traveler may choose between theroute of the Midland direct and thatof the Denver &^ Rio Grande via intermediate points are common toboth, namely, Glenwood Springs, Leadville andBuena Vista, not to mention INIanitou, which isclosely connected with Colorado Springs by atrolley line as well. Each route crosses theContinental Divide at a great altitude, and pre-sents a rapid succession of extraordinaryscenes, in which valley, peak, gorge, cliff,meadow, forest, lake and torrent are com-bined and contrasted. 148
