People gathered at Lake Prodolongo to witness the inauguration of the new Chinese year with fireworks, in ancient times they were traditionally lit to scare away the monster Nian, half dragon, half lion, who, according to legend, attacked the villagers and sometimes devoured children, but could be chased away with loud noises. In addition, they distanced the evil spirits, which otherwise could bring bad luck.
