An epitome of hydrotherapy for physicians, architects and nurses . tendant does not touch the patientduring the treatment. Friction due to the mechanicalimpact of the stream of water under a pressure of 20 ormore pounds is relied upon to furnish the mechanicalstimulation desired to enhance reaction. The apparatusfor this purpose has been described. The attendantstanding behind the douche table (Fig. 31) carefully ad-justs the water temperature and pressure prescribed bypermitting water to flow out of the outlet provided forthat purpose. The patient is directed to stand just withinthe circular douche apparatus (so called because the orig-inal design provided several f-inch circles of perforatedtubes) and to grasp the anterior upright tubes with each 126 AN EPITOME OF HYDROTHERAPY hand. The attendant directs the stream first upon theback, either in solid form (jet douche) or in the shapeof a fan, which is produced by placing the tip of the index-finger upon the nozzle outlet (fan douche). The doucheis moved slowly up and down the trunk and Fig. —Position of attendant. (Courtesy of J. L. Mott Co.) The patient is directed to turn to receive the fan doucheon the anterior portion of the body. The jet douche isnever applied to the latter. On expiration of the timeprescribed, as ascertained from the clock, the patient isdried by the attendant after the first treatment and sentinto the drying cabinet, or he may dry himself in the HYDRIATRIC INSTALMENT 127 latter. He now proceeds to the dressing cabinet, whencehe goes out into the open. Reaction is furthered by notpermitting him to remain in a warm room, and the deepinspiration produced by the douche facilitates oxygena-tion of the blood in pure air. In the beginning of thetreatment he is directed to walk or otherwise exercisegently. A feeling of lassitude will warn the patientagainst excessive exertion. Repetition of the douche ismade in accordance with the prescription. It may beordered biweekly or triwe
