Sebaceous gland, light micrograph

Sebaceous gland, light micrograph. Sebaceous glands of the skin are multilobulated and filled with cells packed with lipid-rich vacuoles. The duct of the gland, seen at right, may connect with a hair follicle or direct to the skin surface independent of hair. The secretory product is sebum released when the cells degenerate, a process termed holocrine secretion. Cell losses are replaced by mitotic cells at the base of the lobules. Paraffin section. Masson’s trichrome stain. Magnification: x130 when printed at 10cm.
