According to local legend, a fisherman found an injured pelican off the coast of Mykonos in the 1950s and nursed it to health. He set it free but it never left the island and was happy strolling through the streets. It became a popular mascot and was called Petros the Pelican. It died in 1986 after getting hit by a car and the people of Mykonos went into mourning, supposedly. Reports said Jackie Kennedy-Onassis and Hamburg Zoo donated replacement pelicans, also called Petros, but details are sketchy and hard to verify. Only one thing is certain: one or more pelicans continue to wander around the streets of Mykonos, to the delight of tourists and the Mykonos tourist board.
