Babesia protozoa. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Babesia sp. protozoa and a red blood cell. Several Babesia species cause malaria-like diseases in humans and livestock. Seen here is the sporozoite, the infectious stage which is transmitted via tick bites. It enters an erythrocyte (red blood cell) and undergoes asexual reproduction. The offspring burst the cell and enter the bloodstream, ready to infect additional erythrocytes. Magnification: x10,500 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
