Paramecium protozoa. Differential interference contrast micrograph of Paramecium caudatum protozoa, showing food vacuoles (circles) containing ink (black), which they were fed to show the process by which they ingest their food. These ciliate protozoa inhabit freshwater, where they feed mainly on bacteria. They move by beating their cilia, hair-like extensions that cover their bodies.
