Leachate pollution (white and brown stains and deposits) at a rubbish dump. Leachate is polluted, toxic water formed by rainwater leaching toxic chemicals, decomposition products and heavy metals from waste items at a rubbish dump. As the leachate drains away and evaporates, it can leave toxic deposits and stains behind, as seen here, polluting the soil. If the leachate enters the groundwater it can contaminate drinking supplies. Drainage systems at rubbish dumps are designed to prevent this happening.
