Close up of blooming poppies (Piani di Castelluccio, central Italy)

Piani di Castelluccio are a karst-alluvial plateau in the central Apennines, located on the Umbrian side of the Sibillini Mountains, at the foot of Monte Vettore. It falls within the territory of the municipalities of Norcia (PG), near the hamlet of Castelluccio), in the Monti Sibillini National Park. Second largest Apennine plateau after that of Campo Imperatore, it constitutes the bottom of an ancient Apennine lake, now dried up and known for its karst phenomena: the Plans are three, they are located at about 1,350 m and cover an area of 15 km. It is famous for the Fiorita, or the phenomenon of flowering that colors the plain between the end of May and the beginning of July: in this period, poppies, cornflowers, daisies and lentils bloom.
