The typically gave details of all residents (including businesses) and their addresses and included lists of magistrates, councillors, doctors and other officials; as in this page from the Whitby, Yorkshire example from 1898. Publishers included the Post Office, Slater's, Kelley's, White's, Ibbetson's, Lund's , city and town councils, newspapers and many others
