Cistanche phelypaea Yellow Broomrape
Cistanche phelypaea This spectacular plant is a member of the broomrape (Orobancheaceae) family but has a lupine like shape, five lobed two lipped flowers and can grow half a meter tall. The flowers are big and bright yellow with a five-lobed corolla, while the leaves are much smaller and scale-like in appearance. The genus Cistanche which belongs to the family Orobanchaceae includes 16 species. They form an attractive group of phanerogamic root parasites. The occurrence of the genus is restricted to certain arid and semi arid regions of Africa, Asia and the Mediterranean are including parts of Southern Europe. It occurs in lowland areas, often in damp sand dune habitats, but it is both rare and localized.
