Venice, St Mark's Square. Italian soldier attends to lowering of the flag ceremony at dusk

Venice, capital of northern Italy’s Veneto region, is built on a 118 small islands in a marshy lagoon in the Adriatic Sea. Venice was named after the ancient Veneti people and was largely uninhabited until the 5th century. Venice was the major Mediterranean maritime power in the 14th to 16th centuries. The city is made up of six districts - San Marco, San Polo, Santa Croce, Dorsoduro, Cannaregio, Castello. There are no roads or cars and transport is via canals and pedestrian bridges. Subsidence is an ongoing problem and the Acqua Alta ("high water") tides can rise up to 2 meters (6 feet) and flood the low-lying areas, including St Mark's Square.
