Bottom: The Parthenon was built as a temple of the goddess Athena Parthenos, and, inside as well as out, was beautifully adorned with sculptures. But the greatest treasure of the Parthenon and of all Athens was the colossal statue of the goddess Athena in ivory and gold. It was the work of Phidias, one of the greatest Greek sculptors. Note: For the ancient Greeks, the Parthenon served as a temple to the  goddess Athena. Completed in 432 , it stood on the Acropolis in Athens. Within, at the west end of the nave, stood a 40-foot high statue of Athena Parthenos (Parthenos means "maiden"), sculpted by the renowned master Phidias. The statue was a framework of wood covered in ivory and gold. Athena held in her right hand a statue of the goddess Nike (Victory).
