The first motorist's filling station in England was officially opened in November 1919 at Aldermaston, Berkshire by the Automobile Association (AA) to promote British-made coal-based benzole fuel as opposed to Russian Petrol. It was sold at cost price to members of the AA. The single hand-operated pump, was operated by an AA patrolmen in full uniform. The unmarked site is now in a lay-by on the A4 Bath Road,
