This engraving, by J. Mulder in 1694, shows a dock of the Dutch East India Company in Amsterdam around 1670. The Dutch East India Company or the VOC (the acronym for the Dutch name - Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie) was a business chartered by the Netherlands government in 1602 and granted the rights to carry out a monopoly in trade in Asia It is credited as the world's first multinational corporation. Shipbuilding and ship travel were a major part of their business - importing and exporting the goods they produced and bought in Asia.
