Anopheles mosquito. The female mosquito feeds by piercing the skin and sucking blood through the proboscis (tube-shaped mouthpiece, left). She uses the blood meal for the production of eggs. This specimen is from the taxonomic grouping named the Anopheles gambiae complex. These mosquitoes are the most important vector for the transmission of malaria to humans in Africa.
