Scale insect on citrus leaves
Scale insects like limpets form regimental lines along the ribs on the underside of a citrus leaf, in this case the large leathery leaf of a grapefruit. These sap sucking insects have a waxy coating which normally prevents insecticides from penetrating and killing them. The insects exude a sticky substance called honeydew, on which grows a black 'sooty mould' fungus, resulting in reduced photosynthesis and defoliation. Best dealt with by applying methylated spirit with a toothbrush.
