The Falklands Memorial in Alexandra Gardens, Cathays Park, Cardiff, Wales, UK

This memorial to the British people who died in the Falklands conflict of 1982 was created in 2007 by the Wales branch of the South Atlantic Medal Association. To read details of the people named on the memorial, choose a category below. The memorial centres on a five-tonne rock from the Falkland Islands, a gift from the islanders. The rock was taken from Mount Harriet, a strategic hill captured by UK armed forces in a battle on 11 and 12 June 1982. The plinth bears the names of the 255 sailors, soldiers and airmen who died on the UK side. Also named on the memorial are three civilian residents, all women, who died when Stanley, the islands’ capital, was shelled by the Navy on 11 June 1982 prior to troops being landed.
