, Verdun, Meuse, France - City centre at the Meuse River. On the left, the Victory Memorial with a crypt for all the soldiers who fought in the Battle of Verdun, carved in the former fortification wall. One of the biggest and bloodiest battles of the First World War and in history took place in 1916 in Verdun. The Hell of Verdun lasted several months, cost hundreds of thousands of lives of German and French soldiers without a significant change to the front line. In 1987 Verdun was entitled as The World Centre for Peace, Freedom and Human Rights by the UN.
