Genetic mapping. Scientist sequencing the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) of eastern gamagrass (Tripsacum dactyloides). Genetic mapping reveals the sequence of nucleotide bases within the genes, and the location of the genes on the chromosomes. This scientist is trying to identify the genes for aerenchyma, or spongy, air-filled roots found in eastern gamagrass. These roots store reservoirs of water, and allow the plants to survive in both dry and soggy soils. Once the genes are located, they could be transferred to corn crops to increase their yield in a variety of growing conditions.
