Scopulariopsis fungus, light micrograph

Light micrograph of a Scopulariopsis sp. fungus. The round structures are conidia, the asexual reproductive spores of the fungus. Each chain of conidia grows on a specialised hypha (stalk) known as a conidiophore. This fungus is found in soil and is an opportunistic human pathogen. Scopulariopsis sp. most often cause infections of the nails and skin (onychomycosis). In immunocompromised patients they may cause subcutaneous and invasive infections at different locations, including sinusitis, endocarditis and disseminated infections.
