Plants recovering after volcanic eruption. This whole area was destroyed during the April 2007 eruption of the Piton de la Fournaise volcano on Reunion island, Indian Ocean. A year on the plants are beginning to grow back. This shield volcano has erupted more than 100 times since 1640 and is under constant monitoring. Photographed in April 2008.
