Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the human body louse, Pediculus humanus, showing the head, segmented antennae, and first pair of legs; the large claws are used for attachment to clothing or hair. The louse transmits serious diseases, including relapsing fever, trench fever and typhus. Until personal hygiene in the developed World improved, typhus epidemics were common, with the lice needing only a 3 week stay on clothing to produce another generation. More recently, the disease has appeared during wartime in unhygienic situations. Magnification: X 230 at 10x8 inch size.
