Calcium carbonate precipitation. Polished section of rock showing how calcium carbonate, in the forms of calcite and aragonite, has precipitated into the rock from water oversaturated with calcium. Precipitates like this are formed when calcium ions react with carbonate ions, as happens in hard water. The precipitation at bottom shows full-grown crystals, whereas towards the periphery there are increasingly thinner subcrystalline layers.
