Trailing in habit, with acorn-shaped fruits, ribbed, smooth, thin-shelled, dark green. Flesh light yellow, bakes well, with sweet, inviting flavor. An early maturing variety. Turban or Essex Hybrid 10 8 These varieties are commonly considered the same, but more accurately, Essex Hybrid has a harder shell than Turban. A winter variety of excellent keeping quality for home and market garden use. Fruits weigh 9 to 10 pounds, turban-shaped, cylindrical, flattened, with distinct button on blossom end. Skin orange-red in color, some- what rough; flesh deep orange, and of good flavor. VERMONT HUBBARD 12 8 to 9 Originated by the Vermont Agricultural Experiment Sta- tion. Similar in size and shape to Improved Hubbard, but more warted and uniform. Fruits weigh 10 pounds; dark green in color; shell very hard and strong; flesh excep- tionally thick, deep orange, dry, fine-grained, and of excel- lent flavor.
