Winter flow through sluice of major reen number 3738
The whole of the Gwent Levels around Wentlooge is covered in a series of minor and major reens to stop flooding in winter and to stop the land drying out in summer. The major reen is controlled in its flow to the sea and here it is fully open in winter mode after a period of heavy rain. If water levels fall too low in summer then the water level is topped up by pumping river water from the river usk.
