Amore impressive example in the same city is theMosque of Ebn Touloun (Fig. 104), 876, conspicuousfor the rugged grandeur and massive splendour char-acteristic of early work. The architect, according to Macrisi, was a Chris-tian, and refused to build the mosque of materialsplundered from desecrated churches—a fact whichhis rivals were quick to use as a weapon against was thrown into prison and grievously mal-treated, but finally released when it was found im-possible to dispense with his services, and his originaldesign was carried out.
