Common toad (Bufo bufo) is found throughout Eurasia. It spends most of its time on land although the female returns to water to lay her eggs. The adult can grow to 18cm and have a warty green or brown skin. It feeds on insects, larvae, slugs and worms, and to defend itself against predators it secretes a toxic substance called bufagin. This toad is sitting on sphagnum moss. Photographed in the Scottish Highlands, UK.
