Three-dimensional computer generated model of a 146 base pair long DNA strand as it appears in the nucleosome.

Three-dimensional computer generated model of a 146 base pair long DNA strand as it appears in the nucleosome. Nucleosomes form the fundamental repeating units of eukaryotic chromatin, which is used to pack the large eukaryotic genomes into the nucleus. In a nucleosome, the DNA is wrapped around a protein histone core (which is not shown in this model so that the structure of the DNA can be more clearly seen). Histones are strongly alkaline proteins which package and order the DNA in structural units called nucleosomes. Model based upon the Protein Database entry #1AOI.
