Aerial View of Namib desert with Fairy circles and arid grass formations, Namibia, Africa by Monika Hrdinova / Dembinsky Photo Associates This coastal desert stretches along the Atlantic coast of South Africa northward to Namibia and Angola. It is regarded by the scientific community as one of the oldest and largest true deserts of the world. The fairy ring formations pictured here are of unknown origin however current thought is trending toward a complex relationship between underground termite activity and moisture and nutrient requirements of the vegetation surrounding the circles.
