Latmul culture, Plug of a sacred flute depicting a human-like bird, an important figure in the Sepik region. The large transverse flute was played during parts of the initiation ritual in the men’s house. The tones drawn from it were considered to be the voices of ancestors. 60cm (23 5/8in.) The total Iatmul population is about 10,000 people. The homeland of the Iatmul is along the middle course of the Sepik River in the country of Papua, New Guinea, Indonesia
