A 19th Century illustration of the Zigzag armature invented by Liverpoool born ​Sebastian de Ferranti (1864-1930). When combined with Sir William Thomson's (Lord Kelvin's) dynamo the machine gave five times the output of AC electricity (AC Alternating Current) than any previous machine of it's size.
