E. coli bacteria strain O157:H7, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). E. coli are Gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria that are part of the normal flora of the human gut. Although most are harmless, some strains produce a toxin that causes severe diarrhoea and can be fatal. E. coli O157:H7 is an enterohemorrhagic strain, which causes bloody diarrhoea, and occasionally kidney failure, especially in young children and elderly people.
