Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Male garden spider head, large chelicerae and pedipalps (Argiope sp.). Likely Argiope appensas. The genus Argiope includes rather large and spectacular spiders that often have strongly colored abdomens. Many of the species are garden spiders. These spiders are distributed throughout the world. Most countries in tropical or temperate climates host one or more species that are similar in appearance. The average orb web is practically invisible, however there is a strong visible pattern of white banded silk made by some species. This white banded silk forms an X or a zigzag in the centre of the web. Magnification: x9 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
