Portland Bill, with its candy-striped lighthouse, lies at the southern end of the Isle of Portland. The Isle is a four-mile long block of Jurassic limestone, tethered to the mainland by the shingle spit or 'tombolo' which is the 18 k long Chesil Beach. The island is best know for the fine limestone which is extracted from various quarries. Stone from the island faces the United Nations building in New York, was used to build much of London including Christopher Wren's St Paul's cathedral. There are still in existence blocks of stone, marked in Christopher Wren's hand but not used in the final construction. Thomas Hardy called it, 'The Isle of Slingers' and it featured in his novel, 'The Trumpet Major'. Like St Ives, in Cornwall, the Island enjoys a special quality of light and is a draw for artists from around the world.
