Saline di Tarquinia, Tarquinia salt-pans

The Tarquinia salt-pans were active up till 1980 after which the production of salt ceased to be economically viable, and the area was converted into a Nature Reserve. Visiting is restricted and the area is used for school trips and teaching children the importance of nature. The area is largely visited by wintering wildfowl, including hundreds of Flamingos, and is also a migration hot-spot for several species of birds. The Reserve lies about 60 kilometres north of Rome, just north of Civitavecchia.
