Clouds reflecting light from the setting sun, in turn are reflected on the surface of Lake Michigan providing a foreground setting for the Mackinac Bridge spanning the Straits of Mackinac with Lake Huron to its left and Lake Michigan to its right as seen from the Upper Peninsula's St. Ignace just before sunset, The suspension bridge opened in 1957 and connects Michigan's Upper Peninsula and its Lower Peninsula and is also known as the 'Big Mac' or the 'Mighty Mac.' The bridge's main span stretches 8,614 feet making it the fourth longest suspension bridge in the world, though the total structure is about five miles long (26,372 feet) making it the 24th-longest main span in the world and the longest suspension bridge between anchorages in the Western Hemisphere. The toll bridge was designed by David B. Steinman and links the communities of Mackinaw City on the south with St. Ignace on the north.
