One of the 'Druids' Trees', a stand of some 20 ancient yews at the heart of Kingley Vale National Nature Reserve: "one of the finest yew forests in western Europe". Modern research suggests they date back to pre-Christian times, but there is also a legend that they were planted to commemorate a battle won against invading Vikings. The surrounding land is species-rich, unploughed thin-soil chalk downland grassland used for centuries as sheep pasture.
