A Roman line-of-sight surveying instrument (groma) at a display by The Ermine Street Guard at Loggerheads Country Park, Denbighshire, Wales, UK. A plumb line is dropped from the centre of the top cross to a datum peg planted in the ground. The cross is turned so that one of the arms is pointing in the desired direction & a line sighted through two of the plumb lines & the central datum line. A ranging pole held at a distance in line with the three vertical groma strings creates a straight line which can be marked with a string run from the datum peg to the ranging pole. Repeating the procedure using the other two strings & the datum line creates a right angle on the ground where the string lines meet at the datum peg. The re-enactor is dressed as a legionary with an Imperial-Gallic helmet & iron mail (lorica hamata) body armour over a woolen tunic. His sword (gladius), studded leather apron to protect his private parts & caliga hobnailed leather sandals are also visible. This display took place outside the Loggerheads Countryside Centre on National Archaeology Day 19 July 2003.
