VOUGHT VE-7s VE-7s of fighting squadron 6 (VF-6), landing on board USS LANGLEY (CV-1) circa 1927. Under wing marking "6-F-16" indicates this plane is attached to VF-6 as a utility plane over and above its fighter strength. Carrier decks had the usual lateral arresting wires, but also had an arrangement of fore and aft wires as seen here. These wires propped up on wooden "fiddle blocks", were intended to be caught by the small anchor-shaped hooks on the underside of the main landing gear axle to keep the plane from swerving off the flight deck to either side when its tail hook caught the arrest
