Tartar.—This is a valuable breed, for sometime introduced into the United States. They are a medium-sized animal, with agreeably- expressive faces, prominent noses, ears drooping forward, and covered with short, but very fine, glossy, silken hair. The principal value of this animal consists in its remarkable powers of procreation — the ewes pro- ducing lambs twice each year, and from three to four, and not unfre- quently five at a time. The quality of the mutton being of the highest order, devoid of woolly or other disagreeable taste, and possessing a delicacy resembling venison, with their capacity for furnishing lambs at all seasons of the year, make them of great value to those whose chief object is to breed for the butcher. LoNG-wooLED. — The long-wooled sheep are of the largest size. The Fig. New Leicester or Dishley breed stands deservedly at the head of the list and, indeed, for symmetry of shape, early maturity, and attaining: to a cob.
